Abstract

The work shows the changes in terminology stipulated by adoption of Tonnage Convention 1969. The work can be used for the study of shipping business and other subjects. The application of the 1969 International Convention on the Measurement of Ships has a great positive effect on merchant shipping. It has become impossible to reduce the value of gross and net capacity by removing from the calculation of the volumes of some individual rooms. In the most positive way, this affected the seaworthiness of the ships and their survivability, since now there is no need to build shelterdeks and unjustifiably increase the volume of the engine room.

Gross and net tonnage values calculated by the Convention more accurately characterize the size of the vessel. Approximately 50 % reduction in the calculation of the vessel's capacity. The possibility of changing such characteristics of the vessel as the freeboard height and the associated net capacity of the vessel makes it possible to significantly reduce the level of port charges when transporting high-volume cargo.
