REASONS AND CONSISTENT PATTERNS OF CHANGING OF POSITION OF PIVOT POINT

Abstract

This article deals with the theoretical justification of reasons and consistent patterns of the pivot point position changing.
Due to application of comparative method during ship handling it may seem to the operator that the vessel rotates around him, although in reality the vessel rotates around the pivot point (PP). It can lead to false distance assessment to landmarks and cause an emergency.
The awareness of reasons and consistent patterns of PP position changing will allow to assess his position during maneuvers. This quite often becomes essential, especially during maneuvers of big sailing ships.
Such knowledge of the PP position changing can be adjusted to any ships in order to increase accuracy of ship handling during operations at sea.
